Biossil becomes Toronto’s newest unicorn
The Toronto biotech raised $153 million USD in an all-equity round led by the OpenAI Startup Fund at a reported $1 billion USD valuation. Biossil uses AI to identify shelved drug candidates that may merit renewed clinical development.
$162M backs 10,000 AI work placements
The federal government announced up to $162 million over five years for Mitacs AI Advantage. The program will connect students, recent graduates and postdoctoral fellows with Canadian businesses adopting and developing AI.

ThoughtWire explores a sale after entering creditor protection
The Toronto digital-twin software company launched a court-approved process to find an acquirer or investor by October 20. BetaKit reports that its workforce has fallen sharply as revenue declined and debt obligations mounted.
Fairfax prepares a new share-buyback program
The Toronto-based insurer says the TSX accepted its notice for a normal-course issuer bid beginning September 30. Purchases will run under TSX rules and remain subject to stated limits.
telMAX secures $215M for its next GTA buildout
The GTA-headquartered fibre provider announced a $105 million structured investment and a $110 million credit-facility increase to support expansion into Burlington, Brampton and Mississauga.

Toronto and UHN partner on 200 supportive homes
The City, federal government and University Health Network announced three planned sites for people experiencing homelessness and complex health needs. The first would provide approximately 80 homes near Toronto Western Hospital.
111 affordable and supportive homes open
The Frankfort Family Reena Residence includes accessible, rent-geared-to-income homes for people with developmental and physical disabilities, including seniors and older adults.
Nuit Blanche Toronto celebrates 20 years
The free all-night contemporary-art event runs from 7 p.m. October 3 to 7 a.m. October 4. The anniversary theme, Tomorrow’s Memories, revisits the people and places that shaped the event.
Municipal election signs can now go up
Candidates may display election signs from October 1, subject to Toronto’s placement and size rules. Signs must be removed within 72 hours after the October 26 election.
Advance voting begins October 6
Toronto’s advance voting period runs October 6–11 ahead of election day on October 26. The City lists approximately 2.14 million eligible voters and 361 certified candidates.

Building HRTech in the age of AI
Motivation Toronto founder Abrham Bisrat moderated a Toronto panel with Angella Fajardo on building a startup in the age of AI. Hosted by Ella Events, the conversation featured Litespace co-founders Jack Lau and Zeeshan Shahid sharing practical lessons on HRTech, entrepreneurship and building through a fast-moving technology cycle.

Elevate becomes Nrth
Festival desk · September 22–24, 2026. What changed, what is driving the conversation, and what remains in progress.
Elevate is now Nrth—and wants to operate beyond three festival days
Organizers unveiled the new name at the opening of the Toronto conference. The Canadian Press reports that the nonprofit and annual festival will both use Nrth, with plans for more frequent events beginning in 2027. This is a change in brand and programming mandate, not a sale or change of ownership.
Sovereignty moves across the agenda
On-site coverage identifies Canadian control of technology, infrastructure, capital, defence and payments as a defining festival theme. Nrth CEO Lisa Zarzeczny says sovereignty now runs across every content track alongside AI.
AI, consumer technology and Canadian scale share the bill
The announced speaker mix includes leaders from Cohere, Reddit, Coinbase, OpenTable, Bumble, Xanadu and Clio, alongside former Raptor Kyle Lowry and investor Arlene Dickinson. Speaker appearances and schedule changes remain subject to the organizer’s live program.
Brampton founders take the Rocket Pitches stage
Six Brampton technology companies are scheduled to pitch on the final afternoon, including travel-planning startup Cotriply. This is a founder showcase; no winner or investment result was public at our cutoff.
Elevator Pitch reaches its decision day
Tangerine’s competition accepted pitches from eligible Ontario businesses at the festival on September 22 and 23. Its rules schedule the winner announcement for September 24 at Meridian Hall; we will not name a winner until a result is publicly confirmed.
